Cupcake Obsession Number 932: Susie Cakes

I had a meeting in Newport Beach this afternoon in the same shopping center as Susie Cakes. Never one to turn down a golden opportunity, I stopped in after my meeting for a tasty treat.

A box of delish'ness just for me!

I opted to go with the Banana Chocolate Chip (a seasonal flavor) and a pink Vanilla.

I opted to go with the Banana for two reasons. First of all, I have had my own experience with Banana cupcakes, although mine had butterscotch chips and chocolate frosting. Second, the seasonal cupcakes are the only cupcakes where the cake is actually a flavor. All of the other cupcakes have either a chocolate or vanilla base and the flavor comes from the frosting. A little disappointing, as I usually enjoy the mix of flavors between the cake and the frosting.

So, I haven’t eaten the Vanilla yet, but the Banana…oh boy! What a treat! I usually like my cupcakes with flavor, not just overly sweet (as some cupcakes tend to be). This cupcake did NOT disappoint. It was light, flavorful and just the right size! The frosting was a cream cheese frosting, with just the right amount of tartness. While, I would not have minded a few more chocolate chips, the few that were in the cake were a sweet surprise.

Cupcake + Book = HEAVEN

Susie Cakes only has three locations in Southern California, but I highly recommend trying one. They also have a GREAT variety of other desserts, including Whoopie Pies, that I am anxious to get back and try! I’ll let you all know about the Vanilla!

    Hi Melanee,

    Are these better than Sprinkles?

Hey Catty, the ‘nilla was okay, the frosting was a little too sweet for my taste. You could taste the Confectioners Sugar in it!

Kelly, they seemed moister than Sprinkles and I like the size better. I could finish one cupcake in one sitting, whereas Sprinkles I always have to eat in two sittings. But I do like Sprinkles because the cake is flavored, not just the frosting…

So, I tried Susie cakes since I work right down the street. It was good. I love chocolate so I tried the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. It is definitely a good size. YUMMY! :)
