How Do You New Year?

Filet + Schramsberg = HEAVEN

Filet + Schramsberg = HEAVEN

I guess when you reach a comfortable spot in your thirties and you have an active husband, dog and baby, New Years Eve tends to lose some of it’s charm. But you know what? My night was great. One of the best that I’ve ever had! I was safe at home with my three favorite guys. We ate a great meal (after Ry went to bed, I was NOT about to share my Filet with that Tubby), drank some great bubbly, and watched a cute movie. The one lesson that I did learn? I can NOT (and should not) stay up past 11. Oh well. Wishing you all the best in 2009!

Another One Bites the Dust

Welp, another year done and gone. Still hard to believe. I look at the little boy in front of me and can’t believe that he is the same tiny baby from last year. It amazes me that I hardly change from year to year (okay, maybe add a few wrinkles here and there) yet Ryder has grown into a little BOY!

He is really starting to talk, although a lot of his words have various uses and meanings. He loves to read (which just makes my heart burst) and “book” was one of his first words. He has a favorite food. He loves waffles (or “wa-wa” as he calls them). If I would let him, he would eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And everything in between. He is adventurous, silly and very sensitive to other’s feelings. He loves to sing and dance and give raspberries. When I think about how much he has learned this past year, I guess it’s not surprising that this year went as fast as it did.

I am not one to make resolutions, but I do have an idea of things that  I would like to do in 2009. I want to continue to guide my son and teach him about the world. I want to work on perfecting my cupcake skills (maybe even branch out to some other baked goods). I want to continue growing in my cooking as well, trying out new recipes and skills. I want to remember to carve out “me time” and get through my book list (that continues to grow faster than I can read). And of course, I want to keep up with my blogging and my blog reading!

This year we will be celebrating New Year’s together at home, with just our family. I am going to cook up some steaks, steam some asparagus, roast some potatoes and pour some champagne. I am fairly certain that I will not make it to Midnight! Such is the life of a mom, huh?

Wherever you are, however you’re celebrating, I hope you have a fabulous, safe time!

New Friend: Hal Moose

We got a  new friend last week. His name is Hal Moose and he is a new animal available NOW at Build-A-Bear Workshop.  He is super cute, very soft and the best part? His antlers light up! That’s right, little Christmas lights on his antlers that light up.

Now Ryder is not a big stuffed animal fan. UNLESS they actually do something. When I first took Hal out of his “condo”, Ryder was pretty interested in what was going on. I set Hal down and he immediately ran over to him. When I pressed Hal’s hand (paw?), the lights came on and Ryder’s face just lit up! He was really excited about Hal! I set Hal alongside a snowman that plays “Frosty” and pressed the buttons on both. Ryder was beside himself with excitement. Needless to say, I am tempted to take the battery out of the snowman if I have to hear “Frosty” one more time, but he loves it so I tolerate it.

In the box with Hal, came the book, “Holly and Hal Moose: Our Uplifting Christmas Adventure.” It’s a little advanced for Ryder, but the story is a really cute Christmas story that I look forward to reading to Ryder in the next couple of years.

In addition to Hal Moose, Holly Moose is available at Build-A-Bear Workshop. If you buy Hal and Holly together ($12 each) you get the book for free! You can also buy the book on its own for $15.99. I think that Hal is a great addition to the Christmas fun in our house and highly recommend that you get your caboose to the nearest location (or the online store) to get yourself one (or two). You won’t be sorry!

Bon Bons and Soap Operas

For you Stay-at-Home Mom’s, do you ever feel under appreciated? When you tell someone that you are a SAHM, do you ever find yourself justifying your situation? Or feel the need to explain all that being a SAHM includes? Why does being a SAHM get such a bad rap from some people?

I know that it isn’t the hardest job in the world. And the rewards are much greater than your average job. And while it may not technically be hard labor, there are days where I literally do not sit down until after 8 at night (unless you count kneeling down to put on Ryder’s shoes). And by no means is it glamorous! Most days I am in my “Mom Uniform” which consists of jeans, t-shirt and ponytail. Sometimes I get a little dressed up…and eventually end up with baby shmootz somewhere on my “nice” clothes. Not worth it. I crawl on the ground, I lay in the grass, I wipe butts and noses.

Do I eat Bon Bons and watch Soap Operas? Not so much. Today I ate a bowl of Minestrone (while standing in the kitchen addressing holiday cards). That’s it until dinner. Oh. Wait. I did eat three Cheerios and an edamame off the seat of the high chair. And Soap Operas (or talk shows or whatever else is on during the day)? If the TV is on, it is usually on PBS (Rydie LOVES Sid the Science Kid and that Super Why show) or Noggin.

On top of keeping both the kid and the dog alive and well every day, I keep the house stocked with groceries, toiletries and any other “ries” you can think of. When you reach for a paper towel to wipe your face or toilet paper to wipe…your nose at my house, it’s there because I bought it. I vacuum. I sweep and mop. I do the laundry. I cook dinner. I MAKE CUPCAKES.

While compensation would be nice, there’s really not much that I want (other than the occasional sweater or book) besides a thank you, some appreciation. I would love for someone to tell me that, while our house may not be perfect, while I don’t look glamorous every day, I am doing a good job. Is that really too much to ask?

And to all you SAHM’s out there, YOU ARE DOING AN AWESOME JOB!!!

Cupcake Obsession Part 875: Eggnog Cupcakes

Last year on my birthday, Robert gave me the greatest present a girl could ask for. A lovely box of Sprinkles  just for me. One of the cupcakes that he brought me was the Eggnog Spice. It. Was. Incredible. The most delectable, delicious, heavenly cupcake I have ever tasted. Go get one. Now.

When I was pondering my cupcakes for the Holiday season, I came across many good ideas. In the back of my mind, though, I was thinking about the Eggnog cupcakes. I did a search for recipes and came up with A TON. There were two that sounded good, and I finally decided to try one out with a Latte frosting (recipe). I meant to use the other cupcake recipe with the Latte frosting because she mentioned that they weren’t very moist. But I got confused.

Anyway, the batter is VERY dense and I just knew that they would be very cake-y and dense. I am not over the moon about the cake part. But the frosting? Oh the frosting. To quote my husband, the frosting was “EPIC”. And that’s a good thing for those of you not down with the SoCal lingo. Anyway, I usually prefer to make a dozen cupcakes at a time until I get the recipe right, but of course this recipe made two dozen. Grrr. Now I have an extra dozen cupcakes that will only be good for another day or so. And I want to try the other cake recipe, but feel guilty with cupcakes just sitting there. Oh well. I may wait and try the Eggnog again next year and try something else next week. Here is a shot of the “naked” cupcake:

Starting Traditions

Ryder and I are having a lot of fun this year. I am still amazed at how much he has grown and learned over the past year. Last year he was obviously completely oblivious to anything going on around him. No concept at all of the holidays.  Next year I think he will be SUPER into it. But this year, he is aware that something is going on and he is excited!

Every year one of my favorite things to do is to get a cup of Starbucks and walk through the canals in Naples (a neighborhood in Long Beach). Most of the houses are decorated above and beyond your average lights and it is a lot of fun! Last year, Ryder was just too little. But I knew that this year he would probably enjoy it, as he really like lights. So last night (after an early dinner) we bundled up and headed over. Robert thought that Ryder wasn’t really going to be interested, but I just knew he would be. Oh boy! He was so excited!! He was pointing at everything and trying to see it all at once. In addition to being interested in the lights, he was so excited to see the boats! I never expected that. We only walked on one side of the canal, but I just know that in the next couple of years Ryder will be begging us to walk on the other side, too. I can’t wait.

Christmas: Disney Style

On an average day I love Disneyland. But during the Holidays? I LOVE Disneyland! It is absolutely my favorite time of the year to go. This year did not disappoint. What did disappoint, however, was my photography skills. Seriously, I have no idea what my problem was, but every picture came out dark or blurry or both. Oh well, I am showing them to you anyway! Oh, forgot to mention. I am the meanest mom ever. I went to Disneyland without my son. And I had fun!

We started out at California Adventure. We went on Soaring Over California, Monsters Inc. and (my personal favorite) Tower of Terror! Phew, that ride is FIERCE! CA Adv. does have some decorations, but they are nothing compared to Disneyland. Here are the lights on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Just like the real thing

We headed over to Disneyland! We walked in right as they were doing the Candle Light Ceremony. From what I could tell, it was a choir of ten thousand that sang before the tree was lit. I tried to get a picture, but it turned out even more blurry than the rest. Here is an “artistic” view of Main Street:

Was Main St. under water?

Every year, my favorite attraction is the Haunted Mansion. They change the whole ride to Nightmare Before Christmas. It is sooooo fun!

Christmas Wreath, Jack style!

This picture doesn’t do the mansion justice. But trust me. It is worth the cost of admission to get on this ride!

By the time we went by the castle to take pictures, they had dimmed the lights to get ready for the fireworks. That were an HOUR away!! Which brings me to my one big problem this year. I suppose that they want as many people as possible to enjoy the fireworks and “snow” on Main Street. However, it is like they shut the rest of the park down COMPLETELY! They close rides down and basically corral everyone into one spot. If you don’t want to watch the fireworks, it is impossible to get anywhere in the park, as almost every area is roped off. Half of the park was a complete cluster****. Now, I know that in previous years certain areas were roped off, but this is the first year that it was just awful for anyone not watching the fireworks. Okay, done complaining.

After we ate a scrumptious Fried Chicken Dinner (“I’m never gonna eat all three pieces!”) we scooted over to It’s a Small World. They just finished refurbishing the ride and we were anxious to ride! When we got there, we noticed it was roped off. The employee at the front said it was closed during the fireworks and wouldn’t re-open until 10:00 (%#&@^!!!). And then my friend, whom I shall call “Evil Genius”, had a brilliantly evil plan. We told the guy that our husbands were in line waiting for us. He walked us over and asked us to look for them. Well, we looked, but of course they weren’t there (they were home, no doubt pining away for us). The guy looked at us fake-looking, lowered his voice and out of the side of his mouth asked us if we wanted to ride. I sighed and said “I guess. We can just catch up with them.” And off we skipped to jump on the boat! Kids, don’t try this at home!

I tried to get some pictures of all the fun inside the  ride, but ironically enough, the only picture that turned out was the Mexico area. So, in the words of the wee singing Mexican kids, Feliz Navidad!

Back in the Saddle

Okay, I’m ready. I’m ready to jump back in and start writing again. Are there any readers left? I do need to clarify that this time will be different. See, I was getting carried away. I was getting caught up in numbers and comments and awards and status. I completely lost track of the fact that the writing was supposed to be for me. So this time it will be. And that’s all I can promise at this point.

Today I am going to Disneyland to check out the Holiday set-up. It is my FAVORITE time of the year to go and I am going with my oldest, dearest friends. I am beyond excited. Pictures and story to follow very soon!

It’s good to be back.

Doing It All

Really, how does one do it all? If you know, can you share? I have been so busy lately, and I still go to bed with a long to-do list. As a result of such busyness, I am afraid my Blog has had to suffer. Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty to write about, I just am so tired by the end of the day, my thoughts are barely coherent. Oh, plus I started reading the Twilight books (I KNOW! It’s about time, right?) and so for a couple of days there, every available minute was spent reading.

I think I have a husband floating around here somewhere, too. Between the non-stop running of Ryder and the dog’s need to be the constant center of attention, there is hardly any of me left to give. On top of everything else, I am looking for a part-time job (you hiring?). Which means my poor Blog will REALLY be neglected. But hopefully not.

I hope I still have some readers left. If I do, I just ask that you hang in a bit longer. I am trying to get back on track.

Special Birthday Shout!

I just wanted to wish my friend Jen at Buried With Children a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! You make having four kids look easy!! Okay, well at least like a lot of fun. You have a special family and deserve a special birthday. I wish you a special, amazing, beautiful day!
